Mike and I had a very lovely day yesterday, hiking up at Malibu Creek State Park - we hiked through the old MASH filming site, climbed through an old ambulance from the show, encountered a hopping deer (I dunno - it didn't run away from us, it hopped...or maybe I had sun poisoning, who knows). It was a beautiful day.
On the way home, he asked me if we had a good standard of living. It was an interesting question. Friends from home are married now, parents, home owners, concerned with acreage and property taxes and raising their children well. We rent an apartment. I have no job. We have few responsibilities other than financial. I am in no different of a place than when I got out of college. What's different? Well, 5 years, for one thing. Living in a complex with streams and ducks and pools and hot tubs, as opposed to crack dens and the homeless. Having someone else who can do the dishes for a change. What's not different? Sleeping until 11 on a Sunday and then spending the rest of the day hiking in the mountains. Having my friends and family totally support my decision to just quit my job, because I have no real responsibilities.
I think, yes, we have a good standard of living.
